The Conwy club recently sent out an invitation for other people to attend their evenings and it would be good to know which other clubs would be happy to have visitors.

It would also be useful to share some recommendations of speakers who have been inspiring.

Please  send me some details I will publish in my next Newsletter.

Message from Tony Davies of the Conwy Camera Club

Finally the PAGB Trophies Print Competition has been judged and
Conwy did very well.

In the OPEN section Conwy came 15th out of 41 clubs with 181 points when our highest scoring 16 images were counted. We just pipped Blaenau Ffestiniog Camera Club who were 17th with 178 points. Normally the competition is based on the highest scoring 12 images, but this resulted with a four way tie so it had to be extended to the top 16, in which Arden Photo Group were the winners scoring 215 points.

In the NATURE section Conwy came 21st out of 33 clubs scoring 126 points. There were no other north Wales clubs in this list so I imagine we were the only club from the NWPA to enter.

Well done to us for our scores and placing and also for upholding North Wales

in the competition and eyes of the UK photographic community.

Sharon Prenton Jones has recently gained her MPAGB and has sent us this:

“I am pleased to be able to report that I have been successful in gaining the MPAGB (Master of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain). This distinction is described by the PAGB as recognising the “highest standard of UK amateur photography”, and was gained with a collection of 20 images.

The PAGB state that “Applicants for MPAGB must have held DPAGB for a least 11 months on the date of the adjudication The Adjudicators are looking for an extremely high standard of photography: photographs which, in their opinion, would enjoy a very considerable level of success in International Exhibitions, including consistent and frequent acceptances”. Huge thanks to all the models and, of course, my ever-suffering hubby Rob.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO SHARON

U.P.P. – ‘The Camera Club That Comes to You’!
U.P.P. is the ‘United Photographic Postfolios of Great Britain’ and it was formed over 80 years ago. Originally, it was a club that circulated a portfolio of prints, by post, to its members every month, who were able keep it for a few days before posting it to the next member of the group. The membership was divided into smaller groups, called ‘Circles’, of between 12-15 members, so that the portfolios circulated to everyone within a reasonable time. Your responsibility as a member was to write a brief appraisal of each print and enter a print of your own, which in turn would receive critiques from all the other members. There was also an element of competition, with a voting system being used to indicate the ‘best’ prints.
Today, the basic principle of U.P.P.  remains exactly the same, and the Club continues to thrive, with a membership of nearly 250, spread all over the U.K. and beyond. Modern technology has been embraced, so as well as print Circles, some operate entirely online, and more recently, several ‘Zoom’ Circles have been formed, where members ‘meet’ and discuss images ‘live’ and in much more detail, with thoughts, ideas and suggestions being freely exchanged. There are also specialist Circles for Natural History, Monochrome and Infra Red.
Membership of U.P.P is a great way to improve and develop your photographic skills and does not impinge in any way with membership of your existing club. It is actually an excellent supplement to that, where you can try out images in your U.P.P. Circle and receive appraisals from all the other members. Then, having taken note of the various critiques, you can enter an ‘improved’ version in your normal Club, should you so wish. Members of all abilities are very welcome in U.P.P., so even if you are just starting off on your photographic journey, a U.P.P. Circle could be ideal for you.
There is much more information on the U.P.P. website www.uppofgb.com, where you will find galleries of images from the various Circles, together with an application form should you wish to join – and we very much hope that you will consider doing so!
If you would like further information, please send an email to the Membership Secretary, Liz Boud - membership@uppofgb.com or Colin Westgate - publicity@uppofgb.com
